THE RUTH BANCROFT GARDEN SHOW

FEATURES DAVID MUDGETT

This year the Bancroft Sculpture Show will showcase the work of PRSG member David Mudgett as the featured artist. The show is sponsored by The Ruth Bancroft Garden and by Walnut Creek’s Artscape Gallery and Sculpture Garden. A portion of the proceeds goes to the preservation of this nationally acclaimed garden.

The other Pac Rim members who are in this year’s show include, Carol Wedemeyer, Kim Webster, Charles H. Stinson, Betty Rasicot Pillsbury, John Oldani, Kristin Lindseth Rivera, Kate Ruddle, Jiajun Lu, Philip Lange, Michelle Gregor, Rebecca Fox, Christopher Dworin, Kris Borchardt, Tim Beck, Ted Bayer, and Mary Bayer.

The three-acre garden provides plenty of space and a warm backdrop in which to show both large and smaller work. The Garden is located at 1500 Bancroft Road, just north of Ygnacio Valley Road, in Walnut Creek. Directions can be found at www.ruthbancroftgarden.org or by calling the garden at (925) 944-9352.

A fundraising preview reception to meet the sculptors will be held on Friday, June 15, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. It usually is a sold-out event with tickets costing $50 per person. Participants and one guest are not charged. General public viewing of the show is Saturday, June 16, and Sunday, June 17, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is a $10 garden admission fee. Children under 12 are free.

Good news - our new chairperson, Ruth Goldstein, has invited Kenneth Baker, art critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, to be the speaker at the next general meeting. Details: Monday, April 16. Hunter's Point Shipyard, Building 101, auditorium. I am happy to report that the evening was a big success.

CCA: A Legacy in Studio Glass

Founded in 1967 by Marvin Lipofsky (PRSG member), the studio glass program at California College of the Arts was one of the first in the United States. “CCA: A Legacy In Studio Glass” focuses on the important contributions made by four decades of CCA faculty and alumni to the American studio glass arts movement. The exhibition, featuring the work of 37 artists, is on view January 26-April 8 at San Francisco Museum of Craft+Design, 550 Sutter Street in San Francisco, and is held in conjunction with the celebration of California College of the Arts' 100th anniversary.

CLAY NATURALLY A REVIEW OF THE NOVEMBER 10 MEETING Lorraine Rosenblatt Administrator It wasn’t surprising with such renown speakers, that the attendance at our November 10th meeting at Fort Mason, was over 40 people. There was a mixture of people - members, artists who are not yet members, and art students. Daniel Keegan, Director of the San Jose Museum of Art, gave a very delightful slide presentation and talk on the clay history and works that are in the San Jose Museum of Art collection. An engaging shaman with clay, Arthur Gonzales, Department Chair at CCA, presented slides of his work and spoke about the methods he has developed to craft his clay sculptures. John Toki is a well-known clay sculptor whose pieces have been displayed all over the Bay Area. John’s insightful talk along with his slide presentation, concentrated on the thought processes he goes through to make the large scale pieces he executes so well. After the speakers, there was a very lively question and answer concentrating on the state of clay art and its impact on society.

"Strange Days" Show at 600 Townsend

Our current exhibition, "Strange Days" juried by Tara McDowell, curator of painting and sculpture at SFMOMA, opened June 9, 2005. Tara gave a wonderful talk about her experience chosing the work and spoke with the attending artists included in the show. Tara's curator statement:

In the process of viewing slides submitted for this exhibition, I was deeply struck by the emergence of a particular sensibility that pervaded much of the work: a kind of self-aware, at times cheeky brand of surrealism that appeared more often than not, begging the question of further examination. This strain of surrealism is far removed from that of the 1930s, though certain works share with those classic examples an uncanniness that led Man Ray to describe them as “disagreeable objects.” Rather, on view here is something that taps into the uneasiness, abjection, disillusionment, and absurdity that is the flip side of a society obsessed with homeland security, primetime titillation, brand-name belongings, and Stepford values. With this substrata of daily life informing the work of each of these artists—either consciously or not, an element of Pop often emerges by use of, for example, materials such as giant Lincoln logs or flags. Equally present is a latent, though sometimes dark, spirituality evident in angelic wings that also resemble lungs or the grotesque yet beautiful portrait busts of goddess figures. Perhaps what unites all of the works in the exhibition is an engagement with the symbolic and an ability to, as Hal Foster once described the not unrelated work of Robert Gober, sustain enigma.

The Bancroft Garden Sculpture Show

The Bancroft Garden sculpture show has been more successful every year for the past ten years. For the last 3 years, it is an exclusive Pac Rim show, so long as we organize it for the all-volunteer garden foundation. In return, sculptors donate 30% of all sales to the garden. This June 17-19, there were $16,734 in sculpture sales, distributed between 13 sculptors. 38 pieces sold. The average sale was $440, and one sculptor, who does this show every year, sold 14 pieces. The highest price work to sell was $1500, and there were 5 sales over $1000. Huge kudos to Pac Rim’s David Mudgett, the one-man organizer, fund raiser, design director, promote, curator, set-upper, take- downer, sculptor’s advocate, liaison to the gardeners, chief helper and head coach of this event! Pacific Rim Sculptors Group was formed in 1988 by six San Francisco Bay Area sculptors who wanted to establish a new forum for their peers to meet, exchange ideas and exhibit their work. The first newsletter was published in August of 1990. The ongoing exhibition relationship with the Contract Design Center (now 600 Townsend) was also begun in 1990. The organization wrote its by-laws in 1991, “to ensure we remained a democratic organization,” and by 1993 Pacific Rim had grown to the point that an administrator was brought on to handle day-to-day affairs and publish the newsletter. The Pacific Rim Sculptors Group maintains an active slide registry containing slides of the works of its members. The registry is available to members as well as curators, gallery owners and collectors. Pacific Rim publishes a bi-monthly newsletter containing announcements of organization exhibitions, programs and activities, members news, minutes of the meetings, exhibition, grant and commission opportunities, and other information of interest to its members. Pacific Rim sponsors informal slide nights where members gather to view slides and discuss work. Pacific Rim sponsors 4 juried exhibitions per year at 600 Townsend in San Francisco, as well as other exhibitions at venues throughout the Bay Area.
